1. What exactly is the cracking or popping sound we hear when we get treated?
This is called cavitation, a suction effect produced by the body’s articulations. Between each joint cavity, there is a viscid fluid called synovia which is formed partly by a dissolvable gas called nitrogen. During a treatment, the chiropractor rapidly stretches the ligaments around the joints, hence reducing intra-articular pressure. At that point, the gas is released rapidly from the fluid making the cavitation sound. Nothing breaks or scrapes, it’s only a gas bubble being released.
2. Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?
No. Cavitation (articular popping sound) may surprise patients; however, it causes no pain. Adjustment may occasion some discomfort due to major inflammation or tensed up muscles. In such cases, the chiropractor will opt for methods reducing the pain to offer you an enjoyable and effective treatment.
3. Why should we continue treatments when the pain is gone?
Symptoms and pain often represent only the tip of the iceberg of a more serious health problem. Chiropractors don’t only treat the pain; they also try, as much as they can, to get to the source of the problem to prevent further injuries. All too often pain is the last sign of a more serious syndrome. Pain is also likely to be the first thing to disappear with treatments; therefore, by stopping the treatments right when the symptoms disappear, chances are you are not completely healed.
4. Does the treatment require X-rays?
Depending on the consultation and on previous physical assessments, your doctor will decide whether to take x-rays or not. This decision is taken according to the following criteria:
1. A recent and pertinent radiology study
2. A desire to clarify a diagnosis
3. A wish of getting rid of more important heath problems that may be present
4. A need to verify the condition of vertebrae and joints.
There is no need to worry about the radiation exposition since in osteo-radiology, the dose is minimal and without health risks. Furthermore, the Federal Government makes sure that all radiology equipment permit holders follow the established procedures to provide optimal quality.
